La Tortillería
October 7-9
Crane Outdoor Learning Center
We are so excited to bring La Tortillería back to the Lower School this year, and we need your help! Every lower-schooler will have the opportunity to participate in this unique, hands-on experience, making it a meaningful and rewarding event for both our students and volunteers.
We're also thrilled to announce that La Tortillería is expanding to the Upper School! On Friday, October 9, students enrolled in Upper School Spanish classes will have the opportunity to explore the ancient process of nixtamalization, learn how corn is transformed into masa, and make and enjoy their own fresh tortillas. With this exciting addition, we'll need even more volunteers to help make the experience a success!
Throughout this immersive program, students will discover the stories, traditions and cultural significance of corn and masa in both ancient and modern Latin American cultures.
During La Tortillería, students will:
- Learn about the history and importance of corn throughout Latin America.
- Discover the nixtamalization process and how masa is made.
- Prepare fresh masa and make their own tortillas.
- Sample different tortilla variations and experience new flavors.
- Participate in engaging, age-appropriate activities designed for their grade level.
By the end of their journey, students will leave with more than just a delicious tortilla—they'll gain a deeper appreciation for the traditions, history, and cultures that have shaped communities across Latin America for generations.
We would love for you to be part of this special experience! Please sign up to volunteer and help us create an unforgettable Hispanic Heritage Month celebration for our students.
Volunteer Reminder: Please remember to sign in with Campus Security at the Administrative/Admissions Entrance each time you arrive on campus to volunteer. Thank you for helping us bring this incredible cultural experience to life
