Biography

Alissa Sommer has taught pre-kindergarten at Columbus Academy since the 2021-22 school year. She previously taught first grade at Academy as a lead teacher in 2020-21 and was a first grade associate in her first year in 2019-20 when she also worked with CASE, our after-school program. Alissa came to Academy after teaching first grade in a Tennessee public school for 11 years. Alissa grew up outside of Dayton and attended the University of Michigan on a soccer scholarship where she earned a B.A. in Education. She then taught second grade at a private school in Taiwan, and then taught first grade at a charter school near Dayton, before earning her M.Ed. with a reading endorsement from the University of Findlay. During the 2023-24 school year, she completed a certification program at the Columbus Center for Dyslexia and became an International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) certified Dyslexia I Practitioner. Her husband Tom is a chef and they have two children, Isaac '29 and Sadie '37.
