Carly (Hammond) Miller '98 (pictured) was appointed as the first chief operating officer of Cristo Rey Columbus High School. In her new role, Carly leads and supports the private Catholic school's efforts in advancement and strategic planning as well as its professional work-study program, which provides students with years of professional work experience and mentorship before they graduate from high school. Also included in this month's press clippings are Ben Bring '03, John Fergus '70, Isabel Graham-Torrez '13, Ryan Huyghe '92, Bro Krift '95, Jim Merkel '92, Joel Pizzuti '90, Rick Ricart '98 and Patti Zettler '98 as well as obituaries for Douglas Oldfather Abbott '59 and Jonathan London Zelkowitz '82.

2021 Athletic Hall of Fame
The Columbus Academy Athletic Hall of Fame was created in 1993 to honor former student-athletes, coaches and other individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the athletic program at the school and who have brought honor to CA through their athletic achievements. Recognizing health risks associated with COVID-19, the school decided to suspend this year's Athletic Hall of Fame induction. However, we would like to share details of this year's award recipients, both of whom will be celebrated during the 2021-2022 school year.

Ed Carter '96 was a four-sport athlete in tennis, cross country, football and basketball, earning seven varsity letters during his CA tenure. In cross country Ed was the newcomer of the year in 1993, team captain and MVP in 1995 and a district qualifier as an individual in 1995. In tennis Ed was the singles runner-up in the 1996 OHSAA State Tournament after a third-place finish in 1995 and quarterfinal appearance in 1994; and in doubles he earned fourth place in 1993. Ed was also the 1996 recipient of the John Noble Award for the best high school tennis player in Central Ohio as well as the OHSAA district champion all four years. Ed was the team captain as a senior and team MVP his last three years at Academy. He went on to play tennis at Arizona State University, where he was a varsity starter in singles and doubles all four years. After graduation from college Ed continued his tennis career as an amateur, professional and college coach at the University of Texas. His pro highlights include being a two-time US Open participant in doubles, participation in other Association of Tennis Professionals tournaments (four-time finalist), earning an ATP World Ranking for five years and reaching top-600 in the world.

Katie Walker '02 was a three-sport athlete in basketball, track and volleyball earning 12 varsity letters during her CA tenure. In volleyball Katie received all-league honorable mention as a freshman and was MVP her senior year. In basketball Katie was named most improved player as a sophomore, was second team all-district as a junior, and was the basketball captain, team MVP and all-district honoree as a senior. In track Katie was MVP her sophomore, junior and senior years as well as a team captain her final season. Additionally she was all-region and two-time district and regional champion in the long-jump, an event in which she was state runner-up as a senior and placed fourth as a junior. In her final season at Academy, Katie also was district champion in the 200 meters. She still holds the school record for long jump as well as the 4x200 and 4x400 relays in which she ran the anchor leg. After graduation Katie attended Kenyon College, where she played volleyball, basketball and track (indoor and outdoor). She is still the Kenyon record-holder in the long-jump and 55-meter dash and was a three-time All-American in long jump. Upon graduation from college Katie returned to Academy to help coach volleyball on the middle school, JV volleyball and varsity levels.

All alumni are invited to attend Alumni Weekend taking place October 1-2, 2021. This will be the BIGGEST reunion celebration in the school's history featuring classes ending in 0, 1, 5 and 6 as well as the 1995 state champion soccer team. With class parties, educational programming, campus tours, athletic events and family friendly activities, you don't want to miss out on the opportunity to connect with Academy classmates, engage with current students, faculty and administrators, and celebrate the accomplishments of yourself, your classmates and the institution that you know and love.
The school fully acknowledges that the situation regarding COVID-19 and vaccine availability continues to develop. With that in mind, we hope to make an announcement in mid-June about whether or not we will hold an in-person reunion celebration in October 2021. If we cannot hold Alumni Weekend in 2021, we will hold a celebration in the spring of 2022.

Board of Trustees Nominations
The Nominating and Board Governance Committee is seeking nominations to the Board of Trustees. Recognizing the vital role played by trustees, the Committee will work to appoint trustees in a thoughtful and methodical fashion, considering an individual's skill set relative to strategic issues currently facing the school and his or her demonstrated ability to function within the committee process.

School News
Our student-run Service Board has been building and now installing mini-food pantries at locations around campus. The first was installed in December near the corner of Morse and Cherry Bottom Road at the Village Square entrance. The second was placed yesterday at the Vista Shopping Center off Hamilton Road. A convenient system for collecting donations is being created, but for now please contact Service Department Chair Christy Bening to arrange a dropoff. Suggestions include: single/small food servings including mac and cheese, oatmeal, fruit cups/applesauce, peanut butter, canned soup/stew, snack bars (granola, protein, breakfast), hand/foot warmers, gloves in all sizes, and travel-size toothpaste, lotion, soap, etc.

To launch Black History Month this week, our Office of Diversity and Community Life is offering various programming to teachers in each division. An example in our Lower School is this Dream Readers mentorship project that promotes literacy by showcasing mentors of color reading diverse children's picture books and highlighting their personal talents. All of the Dream Readers weekly videos this month will feature Black students and parents from our school's MOSAIC affinity group. Also, a "Celebration of Excellence and Entrepreneurship" on February 28 will include a discussion with various entrepreneurs including Academy alumnus Ryan Williams '08, president and co-founder of Jopwell, who was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2018.

Our senior-kindergarten buddy program stretches back several decades and is often mentioned as one of the most prized memories from an Academy experience. Although this year's seniors were not paired with their kindergarten buddies until mid-fall, and only via zoom so far, they have already started creating bonds with them. Activities have included show-and-tell and, most recently, kindergartners cutting out and then decorating paper snowflakes while listening to directions and encouragement from their senior buddies (view photos).

Sports News
Columbus Academy is excited to announce a pair of new varsity head coaches for the upcoming 2021 spring season! Ashlee Abraham takes over the track and field program while Morgan Fee Maldovan will guide our girls lacrosse team. Neither are brand new to Academy, as Morgan is currently serving as an assistant coach with our ice hockey program and Ashlee has been coaching sprinters for our track teams since 2015. Both are also former student-athletes at Ohio State University, where Ashlee was a Big Ten champion in three events (60-meter dash, 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay) and Morgan competed in two NCAA tournaments as a member of the Buckeyes' women's lacrosse program. "I am really excited to have these two coaches step into new roles within our Viking family," stated Director of Athletics Jason Singleton (read official announcement).

"This is an elite group of student-athletes who are going to be able to go on and play at the next level," Director of Athletics Jason Singleton said while introducing eight Columbus Academy seniors who have committed to join college sports programs this winter (view photos). In addition to five other members of our Class of 2021 who already signed in the fall, Vaughn Armour will play football at Amherst College, Vassar Barney will join the men's lacrosse program at Centre College, Chloe Gouhin will fence at Columbia University, Brady Hess will continue his football career at Carnegie Mellon University, Robert Mills will play football at Washington University in St. Louis, Jack Madison will join the men's tennis team at Colorado College, Katie Schiano will play women's soccer at Bucknell University and Carolyn Tsung will join the women's tennis program at Washington University in St. Louis.
