Middle School Band

Fifth and sixth-grade band are elective classes encompassing the development of basic instrumental technique, stylistic interpretation, performance, and musicianship. Students learn key signatures, meters, fingerings, posture, breath support, embouchure, and articulation.
Seventh and eighth-grade band are elective courses dedicated to increasing musicianship and performance mastery. Musicianship includes advanced rehearsal skills and stylistic interpretation, and sight-reading skill. Performance skills include complex rhythmic patterns, keys, and meters, increasing individual musical independence, increasing awareness of the role within the section and the band as a whole. Performances for band include at least two school concerts.

Upper School Band

The Academy Concert Band is open to students whose playing ability is equivalent to that of an average eighth grade band student. The Concert Band performs in at least three required concerts, which may include OMEA District Contest for Large Group as well as the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest. Concert Band students also participate in Pep Band events.

The Academy Jazz Band offers students an opportunity to explore the Jazz experience in both performance and musicianship. Students perform in a number of settings, including All That Jazz, a Fall concert, and various festivals around Columbus.
