Annual Fund Closes June 30

Every year, we ask all members of our Academy community for their help in keeping Columbus Academy's standard of excellence as strong as ever with a gift to the Annual Fund.

If you haven't made your gift this school year, please join in before the Annual Fund closes June 30. We invite you to make your donation online and let us know if your gift is in honor or memory of a special classmate, teacher or coach. Your important gift will honor their legacy and ensure that the next generation of Vikings continues to build upon our strong foundation.

School News

John Street has been a faculty member in our Upper School as well as an assistant football coach since 2001. Earlier this school year, he asked his psychology students to create their bucket lists (i.e., things they want to do before they die). When the students asked about his items, he mentioned that attending an Army-Navy football game was at the very top of his. So during their last afternoon on campus a week ago, on a day that's designed to be all about celebrating them, our Class of 2018 thought of someone else and surprised their beloved teacher with tickets to this December's game in Philadelphia. A video of it tweeted by senior Kyra Zoog has been watched over 50,000 times and shared by hundreds all over the country, garnering comments from the team's coaches, sports personalities, fans who've invited Streeter to join them at tailgates, and even the Army-Navy Game itself, whose most recent tweet says, "We can't wait to see you at the game, Mr. Street!"
The Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) recently announced that Erich Hunker '81, Columbus Academy's Assistant Head of School for Development and External Relations, will be receiving the 2018 Outstanding Fundraising Professional award! This recognition will be given at AFP's annual celebratory event, the National Philanthropy Day luncheon, to be held on November 20, 2018.  Erich is in his 19th year at Academy and 30th year in the profession of fundraising. While at CA and among many other accomplishments, he has led the school through annual and capital campaigns that have collectively raised more than $60 million in philanthropic gifts. In regard to his volunteer leadership at AFP, Erich is a Past President, a current Board member and an active participant in the Mentoring program as a Mentor.
Sports News

Our boys finished ninth in the state and our girls tied for 47th at the Division III track & field championships at OSU's Jesse Owen Memorial Stadium over the weekend. Earning recognition as All-Ohio by making the finals podium were Karibi Hart in the boys 100 (7th), Khloe Dubenion in the girls discus (8th), Nick Robie in the boys 1600 (8th), Nick Watson in the boys 800 (8th), our 3rd-place boys 4x100 (David Barren, Sam Massick, Harry Mills & Hart) and 4x800 (Angus Soderberg, Watson, Liam McCann & Robie) relays, our 5th-place boys 4x400 (Soderberg, Watson, Robie & Hart) and our 7th-place girls 4x400 (Hannah Clay, Annalise Grammel, Sammie Kass & Regan Cornelius). Our boys were runners-up at both the regional and district meets while our girls placed second at districts and third at regionals.

After winning its first district championship since 2004, our baseball squad upset top seed Archbold 4-3 on a walkoff, 2-RBI single by Davis Friedman. The magical run by our Vikings came to an end in the regional finals, just one win away from a state final four appearance at Huntington Park. Also, our doubles team of Sam Vogel and Suriya Sundaram was the district runner-up and won its opening match of the state tennis tournament before falling in the state quarterfinals, girls lacrosse was the regional runner-up and boys lacrosse won its postseason-opener on the road before losing to eventual state champion DeSales in the second round of the district tournament.
