Academy Alumni in the News

Vanessa Barboni Hallik '99 (pictured) was featured in this month's The New York Times Style Magazine as her sustainable clothing line "Another Tomorrow" officially launched. According to the article, each piece of clothing from the line is fully equipped with a label that has a "scannable QR code that, if a shopper holds their phone camera over it, will direct them to a website explaining where the piece was made and where its materials came from, down to the exact roll of fabric used." Also included in this month's  press clippings  are C aroline Anders '17, Tony Capuano '07, Morgan Harper '01, Ricky Joshi '97, Scott Lawrence '75, Michael Stinziano '98, Angela (Phillips) Thomas '01, Christopher Thorne '86, John F. Wolfe '61  and Laura Zagar '95 as well as obituaries for Thomas G. Shroyer '58 and Glenna M. Spencer (who worked Columbus Academy from 1979 to 1997 and served as the assistant to previous athletic directors Jack McMullan, Mark Barren '78 and Anne Horton; in addition, she passed the torch to Christy Bening to head up the Service Department upon her retirement).

Did you know "Alumni in the News" is consistently the most read section of the Alumni Newsletter? We want to hear from you! If you have clips that you have authored or where you are featured (either in print or on the web), please pass them along for future issues. Press clippings can be sent to Director of Alumni Relations  Melissa Clarke Beckett at  beckettm@columbusacademy.org .

Trio of Stellar Vikings Inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame

Columbus Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame grew to 43 members on January 25 as Phil Cannon '82Lindsey Williams '01 and Scott Smith '03 were officially inducted into the group. Alumni Board president Craig Tann '92 presented the newest inductees with their hall-of-fame plaques after they were introduced and gave a reception speech. Scott, a three-sport athlete in baseball, football and wrestling, rounded out the group as his brother and former coach Stephen Smith '88 introduced the third wrestling state champion in the program's history ( view Scott's induction speech at here ). We again congratulate all three hall-of-famers on this distinguished honor!

School News

Greg Jacobs '87 recently visited campus for a screening of the documentary "No Small Matter" that addresses the early learning crisis for children. Greg kicked off the day during lunchtime with a group of Academy upper-schoolers, fielding questions and speaking to his work as the film's writer and co-director. He then was joined in the evening by Colin McGinnis, CEO of South Side Early Learning, for a post-show talk about the movie, which will be publicly released this spring.
This year's Empty Bowls effort started early in the fall and included Academy students and faculty/staff as well as over a dozen master ceramicists from all over Central Ohio. The result was almost 600 beautiful bowls that were the prized takeaways from a Soup-for-Shelter event on December 13 at Otterbein University. All proceeds help to fund a wall build this spring for Westerville's Habitat for Humanity chapter that will include many volunteers from our school community. Art and ceramics teacher Charity White, who coordinated this year's successful bowl-making push, was quoted in a news article recapping the event.

They join classmates Kiersten Thomassey and Ali Khan, who both signed NCAA National Letters of Intent in the fall.
After leading their respective teams to the state semifinals, Columbus Academy seniors Sarah Neltner and Sam Massick were both recently recognized as All-Ohio first-teamers by the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association and named to United Soccer Coaches All-Region Teams! Sarah was one of eight Central Ohioans selected to the All-Central Region squad while Sam was one of eight boys from our area to receive All-Great Lakes Region honors.
