Holiday Luncheon 2020

The Holiday Luncheon celebrates distinguished alumni, faculty members and friends of Columbus Academy. Two honors are given each year: the Distinguished Alumnus recognition and the Alumni Service Award. Recognizing health risks associated with COVID-19, the school decided to cancel this year's Holiday Luncheon. However, we would like to share details of this year's award recipients, both of whom will be recognized at the 2021 Holiday Luncheon.
2020 Distinguished Alumnus: Bill McMenamy '58
Bill is a former member of the Alumni Board and is actively serving as the reunion organizer and class agent for the Class of 1958. Bill currently has two grandchildren enrolled at Columbus Academy, eighth-grader Clara Stevens and seventh-grader Lauren Stevens. Outside of Academy, Bill is the former chairman of the Columbus Housing Partnership (an affordable housing group) and a former longtime president of the Columbus Board of Realtors. He is the retired owner of Myers Real Estate.
Alumni Service Award: Kay Mason
Kay Mason began her Academy career in 1991 as a member of the lower school faculty. She then joined our middle school faculty and served as the Sixth Grade Team Lead, was a member of the Equity and Justice Committee of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, and became the Head of the Lower School in 2013. Kay was Academy's first Diversity Coordinator before the position evolved into its current full-time state. In 2017, Kay became the Director of Internships and her daughter, Gabby, graduated from Academy in 2015. She and her family now live in New Orleans, where Kay is the Head of the Lower School at the Isidore Newman School.

Grateful for Academy

A key reason for the school's continued excellence is the generosity of our alumni, particularly this year. Alumni support has allowed us to continue to provide the transformational experience of a Columbus Academy education both in person and online during this exceptional time.

To ensure your tax-deductible donation is counted in 2020, please make your gift online or, if contributing via check, postmark your envelope by December 31st. For assistance, please contact our Development Office. We are grateful to all who are making this school year possible. Thank you.
School News

Over the weekend, Columbus Academy alumna Annalise Grammel '20 became the first-ever Ohioan to receive the Mary Desha Founders Medal for Youth from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution! "Annalise's support of Honor Flight Columbus and our Veterans is outstanding, especially for someone of her age," said Ohio DAR representative Cindy Collins Kanwar, who is also an Honors Flight board member. "The Daniel Cooper Chapter, NSDAR, along with Honor Flight Columbus, presented Annalise with her medal at her home in a surprise presentation." The DAR was founded in 1890 by four founding members and now has over 185,000 members. DAR chapters have the opportunity to nominate individuals for the Founders Medals in the categories of Heroism, Patriotism, Education and Youth achievement, all in the spirit of the four founding women. The Mary Desha Founders Medal for Youth honors a young person for outstanding service to community, state or nation through participation and leadership in the community. Congratulations to Annalise, who is now a freshman at DePauw University!
Our latest Experience magazine was published last month. This fall issue looks back on how the school responded to a global pandemic while also uniting against racism and social injustice in what often seemed like an upside-down world (as reflected in the atypical cover shot by photographer Cynthia Wilson). We had to go to print before the fall sports seasons ended so those accolades will be included in the spring edition. Be sure to check out the teacher profile of Pedro Mena on page 30 and the family feature on the Perdues after all the impressive and exciting alumni notes! If you did not receive a copy in the mail or would like to request any additional copies, please reply back to this newsletter to let us know.

Quest was founded in 1968 to showcase the talent of Columbus Academy students beyond their academic performance by exploring the depth of their artistic and literary achievements. Since these upper-schoolers could not hold their annual Art Fair in person this fall, they created a video featuring photography, 2-D pieces, ceramics and live performances. Our athletics department was thrilled to have Ohio State basketball player CJ Walker as an intern this fall. Pictured here with Academy athletic director Jason Singleton, CJ gained experience in all elements of running a school athletic program, including doing some of the live-streaming that enabled our families and fans to enjoy watching live game action while attendance at events was severely limited due to the ongoing pandemic. According to Jason: "Being an elite student-athlete, it's great to see CJ using that same work ethic in a professional setting. He will be very successful in whatever he decides to pursue when he finishes playing basketball." CJ's senior season as a starting guard for the Buckeyes continues with a Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup with Notre Dame tonight on ESPN2.
Columbus Academy recently celebrated five members of its senior class who have committed to continue their athletic careers on the collegiate level. Regan Cornelius signed her National Letter of Intent to play field hockey at Northwestern University, Charlotte Adams will join the women's lacrosse program at DePauw University, Jonah Houston committed to play on the men's soccer team at Westmont College, Sydni Ratliff signed her NLI to join the women's tennis program at The Ohio State University, and Ashley Reynolds will join both the field hockey and women's lacrosse programs at The College of Wooster.
