Biography

Alissa Sommer has taught PreK at Columbus Academy since the for the 2021-22 school year. She previously taught first grade at Academy as a lead teacher in 2020-21 and was a first grade associate in her first year in 2019-20 when she also worked with CASE, our after-school program. Alissa came to Academy after teaching first grade for 11 years at Nannie Berry Elementary in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Alissa grew up outside of Dayton and attended the University of Michigan on a soccer scholarship where she earned a B.A. in education. She then taught second grade at a private school, Grace Christian Academy, in Taipei, Taiwan, and then taught first grade at Trotwood Preparatory and Fitness Academy near Dayton, before earning her M.Ed. with reading endorsement from the University of Findlay. Outside of work, Alissa loves children’s books and spending time with family. Her husband Tom is a chef and they have two children, Isaac '29 and Sadie '37.
