SPIRIT DAY/DRESS DOWN ANNOUNCED FOR TOMORROW

All students and faculty/staff at Columbus Academy may enjoy a dress down day tomorrow (Friday, November 2), meaning everyone can wear sneakers and jeans with school spiritwear or colors (maroon and gray) on top. It's a little reward to end a busy week as well as a terrific way to start a long weekend for students, since Monday is a professional development day for faculty and staff.  
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ADMISSIONS OPEN HOUSE

Columbus Academy will host its annual Admissions Open House for all grades from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11. It is an afternoon when the school showcases all it has to offer to potential families, and parents/guardians play an important role in welcoming our guests and answering their questions. UPPER SCHOOL FALL PLAY OPENS TOMORROW

Columbus Academy's Upper School will stage "Twelve Angry Jurors" in the Schoedinger Theatre at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, November 2-3. The cast includes seniors Aylah Mendenhall, Bobby Diller, Sophia Tidwell, Mira Bhasin, Sidney Edson and Cole Raiken, juniors Michael Hoffman and Simon Iobst, sophomores Jay Whitney, Sejal Jindal and CJ Leet, and freshmen Eden Singelton-Tarr and Ryan Reagan. "I'm very excited about the cast and can't wait for you to see them in action," says Scott Dillon, who is directing the show with junior Nikki Turley as his student assistant. Admission is free for Academy students and faculty/staff. For everyone else, tickets are $7 and will be available at the door.
JUNIOR COLLEGE NIGHT ON NOVEMBER 12

At 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 12, Columbus Academy's College Counseling Office will host Junior College Night for our Class of 2020 students, parents and guardians in the Schoedinger Theatre. This is the only college counseling program exclusively focused on Grade 11 families all year. The presentation will provide a road map for the next 18 months as well as demystify the college admission process. Please come and gain a better understanding of what to expect from college counseling at Columbus Academy. 
CELEBRATION OF LEADERSHIP WITH KIMBAL MUSK

 
Columbus Academy is pleased to welcome Kimbal Musk as this year's Celebration of Leadership speaker on November 13. Recognized as a global social entrepreneur by the World Economic Forum, Mr. Musk is the co-founder of Big Green, a nonprofit organization that brings learning gardens to children and educators in underserved schools across the United States. Mr. Musk will be speaking to upper school students in the afternoon and at an Annual Fund leadership donor reception in the evening. The RSVP deadline is November 2, but space is limited. Please reply as soon as possible to attend.
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH RECAP

Our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month concluded in mid-October after a variety of activities both on and off campus surrounded by an extended visit from a familiar friend, Estela Romero, a reporter from Journey North in Mexico. Many other opportunities for celebration of Hispanic heritage were on display throughout the month including lower and middle school Spanish-heritage assemblies, families gathering together to enjoy authentic recipes and a fun-filled community celebration organized by Amy Gonzalez and Gabriela May of ¡HOLA! (Hispanic Outreach & Latino Awareness).
ACADEMY HOSTS LATIN CONFERENCE

 
Earlier this month, Columbus Academy hosted Hieros Gamos Redux (sacred marriage X2), a joint effort between the Ohio Classical Conference and the Ohio Junior Classical League. More than 160 people attended the event including secondary students from Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus as well as OSU graduate students, teachers from around the state and professors from Ohio University, Case Western, Marshall, Wake Forest, Kenyon and Miami. The purpose was an exchange of ideas and to celebrate a love of all things classical: Latin, ancient Greece and the history/culture of the ancient Mediterranean basin. The OJCL Board - which includes Academy's Marcus Grewal '19 and Andrew Cahall '20 - coordinated a number of fun activities for the more than 120 students in attendance. According to upper school Latin teacher Christy Bening, students engaged with adults throughout the day's fascinating talks and enlightening presentations, and "a special thanks to Elise Gursahaney for her work with the OJCL students and to Dr. Franz Gruber for his support of the OCC guests." 
ONLINE ASA REGISTRATION COMING SOON

Winter After School Activities (ASA) will be coming to you with a new spin! Beginning with this winter season, registration will be available through My BackPack as well as the traditional paper form. You can expect registration for winter classes to be available in early December, and communication regarding ASAs to be new and much improved. Stay tuned! 
NOVEMBER PARENTS' DAY OUT

Saturday, November 17, marks our final Parents' Day Out for the fall season. Take advantage of five hours of childcare from noon to 5:00 p.m. while our CASE staff entertains the children with a variety of games, crafts, companionship and fun! To reserve a space, please submit the Fall ASA registration form with a $30 payment to the Special Programs Office as soon as possible. ARTS & MUSIC SCENE

Several years ago, parent volunteers developed a talent show called "Celebrate the Arts" that featured parent, faculty and alumni performers with the goals of celebrating the arts and raising funds. The event evolved into an evening that celebrated our community's cultures and the arts with a variety of food and performances in addition to showcasing the new gallery space in Morris Hall. Now, we are embarking on a new chapter and are re-imagining this event.
SERVICE LEARNING

Several members of our community stopped by the athletic lobby on October 10 to donate blood at the first blood drive of the school year, organized by our Service Board and coordinated by the Red Cross. A total of 22 donors combined to give 19 units of blood, good enough to save an estimated 53 lives in Central Ohio. A special thanks to all of our faculty, student and community donors who generously gave their time to help ensure the event was a success. The next drive is scheduled for January 16, 2019. 
SPORTS REPORT

Columbus Academy's undefeated field hockey squad, now ranked #18 in the nation, faces Ursuline Academy in a noon state semifinal match tomorrow with the winner advancing to Saturday's 1:00 p.m. state championship game, both at Upper Arlington High School. The OHSAA Cross Country State Championships originally scheduled for this weekend have been postponed until next Saturday, November 10. Our boys team (making its fourth-straight appearance and sixth overall) will race at 11:00 a.m. while Academy junior Annalise Grammel (pictured) will take on the National Trail Raceway course at 1:30 p.m. Please click on the Additional Sports Links below for updates on how the rest of our fall sports seasons concluded.
 
Official practices for our girls basketball and ice hockey programs already have begun. In fact, our ice hockey team -- now varsity after successfully establishing itself on the JV level last year -- plays its first scrimmage at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, November 2) against Gahanna inside Chiller Easton.
