COLE WALTER SIGNS TO PLAY GOLF AT DAVIDSON

Two weeks ago, Academy senior Cole Walter signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to join the men's golf program at Davidson College! Cole completed his impressive four-year career on our varsity golf squad by placing sixth at last month's Division II state tournament, which earned him a spot on the All-Ohio Second Team and helped the Vikings win their eighth state title. With a 74-stroke average this fall, Cole also picked up first team all-district & second team all-league honors. As a junior, he made the all-district and all-league first teams and was Team MVP. His sophomore season resulted in first team all-league and second team all-district recognition. And as a freshman on the 2014 state championship squad, he tied for 25th in the state tournament, was an all-district honorable mention and qualified for the all-league first team as co-medalist at the MSL-Ohio championship. In addition to a pair of team state titles during his prep career, he helped lead the Vikes to two district crowns, three sectional titles and three league championships. Cole is the son of Seanna & Matt Walter '87 of New Albany.
CHESS TEAM WINS SIXTH GRADE STATE TITLE

Columbus Academy students (from left) Adam Rehan, Sean Jackson, Evan Schenck-Chang, Aanav Karumsi, Akshaj Jagarapu, Adi Sadana, Joseph Daiber and Reed Swartz won the sixth grade state title at the Ohio Scholastic Chess Association 2017 Grade Level Championships earlier this month at Newark High School! Academy will host a Scholastic Chess Tournament in its Dining Hall this upcoming Saturday, December 2. It promises to be a fun tournament for anyone in grades K-12. There are still a few open spots so this would be a great way to try a chess competition for the first time.
COLUMBUS CROSSING BORDERS PROJECT

Columbus Academy will host a very special community event on Sunday, December 10. It will include works by 34 local artists, a documentary film, food from Himalayan Grill and a tribute to the resilience, strength of spirit and devotion to loved ones that sustains those who have experienced the arduous journeys of refugees. All are welcome, and we hope you can join us! To begin the conversation, our Parent SEED group had a series of meetings with the school's Diversity and Community Life committee throughout the fall. One activity was plotting their families' journeys to Columbus on a world map. Points of origin included China, Pakistan, India, Syria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, England, Ethiopia, Ghana, Barbados, Bolivia, Jamaica, Mexico and Canada!
ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM PLAYS FIRST GAME

Columbus Academy's new ice hockey program played its first official JV game earlier this month as the Vikings faced Dublin Scioto at Chiller Ice Works in Worthington. The turnout from our community was outstanding, which added to the exciting action on the ice to create a high-energy atmosphere! Despite the 5-2 loss, there was much to cheer for including the ceremonial puck drop and Academy's first goal, which was scored by junior Cole Walker on a penalty shot. The squad is participating in the 2017 Adam Allgeyer Memorial Showcase with games tonight (9:00 p.m. vs Dublin Jerome at Chiller Dublin), tomorrow (5:20 p.m. vs ODHC at Chiller Easton), Saturday (9:15 a.m. vs Olentangy Orange at Chiller Dublin) and Sunday (noon vs St. Xavier at Chiller Easton).
ANOTHER KIDS 4 KIDS PROJECT ENDS SUCCESSFULLY

Our schoolwide Kids 4 Kids service learning project wrapped up last week with deliveries to the Childhood League and Siebert Elementary School. The month-long event involved Columbus Academy's youngest kids and our oldest students as well as every grade in between. Thanks to the kindness of our community and the diligence of many volunteers, 32 families and countless others in need benefited from all of the donated food, clothes, toys and household supplies this holiday season. We are thankful for a community that considers others and steps up in such a meaningful way year after year.

FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION ON DECEMBER 8

The Parents' Association of Columbus Academy will be celebrating all faculty and staff members during its annual Sweet Celebration on Friday, December 8. In addition to donations of treats, event organizer Kate Tiwari is requesting volunteers to help organize, sort and deliver all of the goodies on the morning of the 8th. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact her at [email protected]. And if you would like to make a monetary gift so that cookies can be purchased from a local bakery for this appreciation event, please click here.
CELEBRATE THE ARTS ON FEBRUARY 10

Please mark your calendars now for our annual Celebrate the Arts event on Saturday, February 10. Festivities will begin with an art show in the Morris Hall Gallery at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner and performances in the Dining Hall at 7:00 p.m. (adults only). This year's theme of "Weaving a Community" is deeply rooted in the fact that the arts thread creativity, critical thinking, artistic excellence and self-discovery in the comprehensive development of a child. You can purchase sponsorships and tickets as well as advertise to the Academy community in the 2017-18 Arts Program (deadline for submission of artwork is December 15).
ARTS SCENE

When the calendar flipped to November, it officially became concert season at Columbus Academy. In addition to this performance by our Camerata of "Always Something Sings" (a song by Dan Forrest featuring text from famed poet Ralph Waldo Emerson), click on the links below for complete coverage.
SERVICE LEARNING

For the first time last year, Columbus Academy participated in an Empty Bowls Project that involved ceramics students creating bowls that were then used as gifts for attendees at a Soup for Shelter fundraiser for the Westerville Habitat Partnership. We invite you to join us from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on December 8 at Otterbein University for this community-wide event. For more details, please read this article from the current issue of Westerville Magazine that includes quotes from Academy Service Department Chair Christy Bening!
