ADMISSIONS OPEN HOUSE ON NOVEMBER 12

If you know anyone who might be interested in exploring educational options for their children, please encourage them to attend our Admissions Open House from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12. In addition to meeting teachers, administrators and coaches, they will have the opportunity to tour our classrooms and learning spaces, view samples of program materials and converse with members of the school community who have also been through the admissions process. RSVPs are not necessary, and all family members are welcome.
HONORING OUR VETERANS

In honor of the 489 Columbus Academy alumni who have served our country in one of the armed forces, as well as the six current coaches, faculty/staff, facility and security team members (Jasiliki Davidson, Neal O'Brien and Dan Olexio, United States Army -- Dennis Gilman, Matt Mele and Tim Metcalf, United States Air Force) who have also served in the military, the school bell atop Morris Hall will ring 495 times next Friday morning since Veterans Day falls on the following day. Academy's Camerata will sing "America the Beautiful" to conclude the event, which will take place in our Senior Quad prior to the start of classes. From our very first graduate (Carey Evans, Class of 1914) to our first alumnae to serve -- Mary Beth Ray & Jamie Scheiman, both from our Class of 2006 -- to Tyler Mallon '07, who recently assumed command of the U.S. Army's Echo Company, Columbus Academy commends the spirit of service its many alumni, faculty, staff, coaches, parents and friends have chosen to uphold.
DOZEN MORE SENIORS EARN NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Twelve seniors at Columbus Academy have been recognized as Commended Students in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program for their exceptional academic promise: Addis Boyd, Alicia Harmon, Lexis Hughes, Alyssa Kim, Shreyah Mohanselvan, Bilal Mohsin, David Qu, Abhi Ramaswamy, Anders Seline, Liana Shiroma, Anna Shuff and T.J. Whitman! Along with their dozen classmates previously announced as 2018 National Merit Semifinalists, these students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million high-schoolers who took the 2016 PSAT. On average over the past decade, 30 percent of students in each graduating class at Columbus Academy earn recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which is often the most of any school in Ohio and among the top schools nationally.
KIDS 4 KIDS NEEDS FOOD, TOYS & SMALL CLOTHES

Our annual Kids 4 Kids service learning project is in full swing and in dire need of nonperishable food, children's clothing size 7 and smaller as well as toys for all ages (but not puzzles and games, which are already well stocked). Items will continue to be collected from dropoff/pickup locations (look for the blue carts) through Tuesday, November 7. The results will benefit over 32 families from The Childhood League, Siebert Elementary and our surrounding community.
CELEBRATION OF LEADERSHIP

Columbus Academy is pleased to welcome J.D. Vance, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Hillbilly Elegy, as this year's Annual Fund Celebration of Leadership speaker on Thursday, November 30. Mr. Vance will be speaking to upper school students in the afternoon and at a leadership donor reception in the evening. The RSVP deadline is November 17, but space is limited. Please reply as soon as possible to attend.
VALUE OF OUTDOOR LEARNING

One of the major goals of Columbus Academy's strategic vision is "instilling a sense of stewardship and wonder of our campus as a living classroom." We have been collecting photos from throughout the fall that capture these efforts, whether it's walking classrooms, listening to stories around the campfire while snacking on s'mores, putting out food for the migrating birds, enjoying the playground swings, gaining a new perspective by climbing a tree, or exploring a creek and learning about critters during Forest Fridays, our students and teachers are spending more time outdoors because experiencing nature, even with the simplest activity, changes the feel of a class or even an entire day.
IS AN HBCU RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?

From 8:00-9:00 a.m. this upcoming Monday, November 6, all parents, guardians and friends are invited to a coffee and conversation in our Dining Hall with Dr. Michael Marshall, vice president for enrollment services at Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Marshall will be discussing HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), of which there are 101 across the nation that prepare students for leadership and life after graduation.
A WAY TO THANK FACULTY & STAFF

The Parents' Association of Columbus Academy (PACA) is planning its annual Sweet Celebration for faculty and staff members on Friday, December 8. This is an event when homemade or store-bought cookies, candies and any nut-free grab-and-go treats are brought in to be distributed among all of the school's teachers and staff members. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Kate Tiwari at [email protected]
ARTS SCENE

Columbus Academy Student Theatre did such a tremendous job with "A Voice in the Dark: A Salem Story" last weekend. You really had to see it to appreciate the intensity of the acting and effects. In addition to the opening-night scenes captured on the right, there was an excellent preview of the show by a new local theatre promotional project called Opening Night.
SERVICE LEARNING

Columbus Academy's Service Board, led by Service Department member Bry Roberts and students Kareena Arora and Whitney Hannallah, hosted our school's annual apple-picking event at Lynd Fruit Farm earlier last month. The results were 24 large bags and 41 small bags for a total donation of 890 pounds of apples from the Academy community as part of our monthly commitment to Faith Mission! Many thanks to all of the volunteers and participants, including senior Shenique Lewis Penney and faculty members Tim Leet, Adam Cavnar and Beckie Hoagland for delivering the apples to the homeless shelter, which tweeted an appreciative response.
SPORTS REPORT

On Friday, our field hockey squad plays a noon state semifinal game against Shaker Heights at Upper Arlington with a spot in Saturday's 1:00 p.m. state championship on the line. The football playoffs begin Friday night with our Vikes traveling to Union Local in Belmont for a 7:30 p.m. contest. And two runners from our girls cross country team -- Annalise Grammel and Regan Cornelius -- will compete along with our boys squad in Saturday's state cross country meet at National Trail Raceway (girls race at 11:00 a.m., boys at 1:30 p.m.).

After completing regulation and two overtimes in a 1-1 tie, our boys soccer team edged Granville 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout on Saturday for the program's seventh district title in the past 11 seasons! Academy's equalizer by Tyler Schlonsky came midway through the second half. According to a ThisWeek News game recap, "Jack Ostrowski converted on the Vikings' first penalty kick in a Division II district final Oct. 28 at Gahanna. He then replaced Justin Kahle in goal for Granville's fourth penalty kick and turned away Christian Sams' attempt. Academy's Connor Brown followed with the game-clinching goal." The Vikes' season ended in Springfield last night with a 4-1 loss to top seed Tipp City in the regional semifinals. Our girls soccer squad fell just short of its second-straight district crown, losing a PK shootout to Grandview last Saturday.
