2018 COMMENCEMENT ONE TO REMEMBER

 
Columbus Academy honored its 105th graduating class during a morning Commencement ceremony on June 7. Following welcomes by Head of School Melissa Soderberg and Senior Class President Georgia Tuckerman '18, the Valedictory Address was delivered by Lexis Hughes '18 and the featured speaker was John Exline '64, who was completing his 50th year of teaching and coaching at his alma mater. SIX GRADUATES NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS

Six members of Columbus Academy's Class of 2018 have been named National Merit Scholars! Earning National Merit $2500 Scholarships were Jane Li, Andy Zhang, Randy Yan and Austin Zhang while Chris Heermann and Abby Jeffers were both offered college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards. They will be matriculating to the following colleges and universities: Chris to Case Western Reserve University, Abby to Ohio University, Jane and Randy to Harvard University, Andy to Duke University and Austin to Dartmouth College.
GIFT FROM JUNIPERS SUPPORTS COLLEGE COUNSELING

 
Bob and Mary Juniper, owners of Three-C Body Shops, Inc. and parents of recent graduate Jade Juniper '18, wanted to thank the school and, in particular, our college counseling program and team of professionals for their stewardship of Jade and all CA students and families in the college search process. To do so, the Junipers made a generous philanthropic commitment to the school which will fund all of the non-personnel expenses of the College Counseling Department. 
SPRING MAGAZINE HIGHLIGHTS FOREST FRIDAYS

 
Apologies that our spring issue of Academy magazine arrived a little later than planned. In addition to an explanation of our new PreK Forest Fridays program, this edition also includes a profile of Darnell Heywood, student pieces by Gunnar Geiger '19 and Mira Bhasin '19, recaps of recent alumni events, extensive class notes and much more. We hope you enjoy the content and redesign as well as the new ways we are trying to highlight some of the exciting things happening on our campus and within our community! 
ANNUAL FUND CLOSES ON JUNE 30

Every year, we ask all members of our community for their help in keeping Columbus Academy's standard of excellence as strong as ever with a gift to the Annual Fund. If you haven't made your gift this school year, please join in before the Annual Fund closes on June 30. We are still striving toward our goal of 100% parent participation! COLUMBUS ACADEMY GOLF OUTING

Academy Golf Ball
Hit the greens to support financial aid at Columbus Academy! The Columbus Academy community is invited to participate in the 10th Annual Columbus Academy Golf Outing being held on Monday, September 17, at the Columbus Country Club. Designed to benefit financial aid in memory of George N. Corey, former Board of Trustees president and father of Michael Corey '01, this outing will start at 1:00 p.m. followed by a casual gathering at the clubhouse. Golfers will have the option to play a casual four-person scramble or a four-person two-best ball for those who would like a little more competition. We'll see you on the greens!   
PARENTS' ASSOCIATION YEAR-END REVIEW

The Parents' Association of Columbus Academy (PACA), under the leadership of co-presidents Heather Geiger and Claudia Walter as well as the collaborative efforts of hundreds of volunteers, raised over $175,000 during the 2017-18 school year and hosted many events that brought our community together. Thank you to everyone involved in PACA, including co-presidents for 2018-19 Mike Ahern and Laura Weiser!
ERICH HUNKER '81 EARNS FUNDRAISING AWARD

The Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) announced last month that Erich Hunker '81, Columbus Academy's Assistant Head of School for Development and External Relations, will be receiving the 2018 Outstanding Fundraising Professional award at AFP's annual celebratory event, the National Philanthropy Day luncheon, to be held on November 20.

Progress reports are now available on My BackPack for Grades 1-4. Complete progress reports for PreK, Kindergarten and Grade 5 are in the mail as well as ERB scores for Grades 3-5. ARTS & MUSIC SCENE

In mid-May, our lower school strings 2A and 2B groups performed for residents at Sunrise of Gahanna Assisted Living. The following morning, Level 1 and those same Levels 2A & 2B students held a concert during lower school assembly while Level 3 and the Fifth Grade Orchestra's performed after school. The successful year for all 85 lower-schoolers in our LS Strings program was celebrated the following week with an ice cream party.      
SERVICE LEARNING

 
In what proved to be a culminating event to their studies this year, our fourth grade students hosted an Empowerment Fair to help highlight and reflect on what they had learned related to kindness and service throughout the school year. The class had focused throughout the entire year on acts of kindness, inspirational quotes and service learning in hopes of empowering the students at CA to make a positive impact on the world. Every student in turn shared different opportunities that the Academy community can participate in to help spread kindness and pay it forward, displaying and presenting them throughout the classrooms on poster boards.
SPORTS REPORT

Our boys finished ninth in the state and our girls tied for 47th at the Division III track & field championships at OSU's Jesse Owen Memorial Stadium over the weekend. Earning recognition as All-Ohio by making the finals podium were Karibi Hart in the boys 100 (7th), Khloe Dubenion in the girls discus (8th), Nick Robie in the boys 1600 (8th), Nick Watson in the boys 800 (8th), our 3rd-place boys 4x100 (David Barren, Sam Massick, Harry Mills & Hart) and 4x800 (Angus Soderberg, Watson, Liam McCann & Robie) relays, our 5th-place boys 4x400 (Soderberg, Watson, Robie & Hart) and our 7th-place girls 4x400 (Hannah Clay, Annalise Grammel, Sammie Kass & Regan Cornelius). Our boys were runners-up at both the regional and district meets while our girls placed second at districts and third at regionals. After winning its first district championship since 2004, our baseball squad upset top seed Archbold 4-3 on a walkoff, 2-RBI single by Davis Friedman. The magical run by our Vikings came to an end in the regional finals, just one win away from a state final four appearance at Huntington Park. Also, our doubles team of Sam Vogel and Suriya Sundaram was the district runner-up and won its opening match of the state tennis tournament before falling in the state quarterfinals, girls lacrosse was the regional runner-up and boys lacrosse won its postseason-opener on the road before losing to eventual state champion DeSales in the second round of the district tournament.

All students rising to Grades 7-12 who are considering participating in a Columbus Academy sports program during the 2018-19 school year need to schedule an appointment with a primary care physician to complete a Pre-Participation Physical Exam (PPE). You must first be registered into Final Forms for the school to be able to document that your completed PPE form was received, this clearing you to practice (see start dates).
