SENIORS FULFILL TEACHER'S BUCKET LIST ITEM

John Street has been a faculty member in our Upper School as well as an assistant football coach since 2001. Earlier this school year, he asked his psychology students to create their bucket lists (i.e., things they want to do before they die). When the students asked about his items, he mentioned that attending an Army-Navy football game was at the very top of his. So during their last afternoon on campus a week ago, on a day that's designed to be all about celebrating them, our Class of 2018 thought of someone else and surprised their beloved teacher with tickets to this December's game in Philadelphia. A video of it tweeted by senior Kyra Zoog has been watched over 50,000 times and shared by hundreds all over the country, garnering comments from the team's coaches, sports personalities, fans who've invited Streeter to join them at tailgates, and even the Army-Navy Game itself, whose most recent tweet says, "We can't wait to see you at the game, Mr. Street!"
SOPHOMORE'S TED TALK GAINS NATIONAL EXPOSURE

In another instance of something related to Academy going viral, last year's TED Talk by sophomore Ashton Cofer was highlighted by ATTN:, a popular social media company based in Los Angeles. Described simply as "This kid invented a brilliant way to recycle Styrofoam," the ATTN: video has surpassed 9 million views, 128K likes, 146K shares and 2.8K comments.

LOWER-SCHOOLERS CREATE MASTERWORKS

Each year, lower school art teacher Lloyd Cicetti selects a master artist to inspire each grade. He then designs an age-appropriate project to highlight that artist's creative signature. Every student completes a work of art based upon his or her interpretation. The students then donate their art to a collage that forms a "Masterwork" for their respective class. In all, 26 Masterworks are created and raffled for some lucky families to win but all families have the opportunity to purchase notecards and/or posters of the student art. The raffle winners will be announced on May 31 and may claim their Masterworks on June 1 during the End-of-Year Carnival (details coming soon) following the Lower School Closing Ceremony.

SERVICE LEARNING

Columbus Academy has been involved in preparing and serving meals at the Faith Mission homeless shelter since the late 1980s when a partnership was initiated under former Service Board advisor Glenna Spencer, who retired in 1997. Through the efforts of then-Service Board president Elaine Law '03, for whom Faith Mission was a passion, the program expanded in 2002 from quarterly to its current monthly format during each school year. For many years, school nurse and Service Department member Beckie Hoagland has managed these monthly trips and advised the student leaders who organize them. Academy senior Shenique Lewis has served as the Faith Mission student leader for the last two years, and her successor for 2018-19 is junior Abby Yakam. Also, faculty members Michelle Platt and Sarah Penney have created opportunities for middle and lower school students to prepare cookies for the mission through a joint service learning program.
