The New Quest

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Columbus Academy have capital campaigns?
Capital campaigns are the result of strategic planning by the Board of Trustees and school leadership, along with feedback from a community-wide feasibility study that identified major priorities for the future of Academy. These important initiatives cannot be paid for through the operating budget; a capital campaign is required to address needs for large-scale campus improvements and building a stronger endowment for long-term sustainability.

Do other independent schools have capital campaigns?
Almost every independent school relies on capital campaigns to realize long-term strategic goals. Philanthropic donations toward capital initiatives minimize the impact on tuition and reduce the need for incurring long-term debt. Columbus Academy, like most independent schools, typically has a capital campaign once a decade.

What are the goals of The New Quest capital campaign?
The New Quest launched in 2011 with a goal to raise $20 million in philanthropic gifts: $10 million for campus enhancements and $10 million for Columbus Academy's endowment.

Who has been asked to support The New Quest capital campaign?
Every member of our school community has been asked to participate, including school parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff.

Can I still participate in The New Quest?
Yes! Even though the $20 million goal was reached in 2015, your gift or pledge can still make an impact for the school. Additional gifts will help reduce the impact of construction costs and debt on tuition and, more importantly, will continue to grow the endowment for long-term financial sustainability. The school will continue to receive gifts for The New Quest at least through 2020, as many donors have made generous multi-year pledges with payments scheduled over the next five years. You may make a gift online, complete a pledge card or email Erich Hunker '81, Assistant Head of School for Development/External Relations for assistance.

How should my capital campaign participation impact my Annual Fund giving?
It shouldn't! A strong Annual Fund is needed to maintain the daily operating needs of the school. Gifts to The New Quest are restricted for the campaign's specific objectives.

Why is there a multi-year pledge period for the capital campaign?
A pledge payment period of three to five years allows flexibility for the generous levels of giving that will make capital campaigns a success. Donors may choose how to fulfill their pledge payments – generally through monthly, quarterly or annual installments.

How will The New Quest donors be recognized?
All donors to The New Quest will be thanked for their support through school and campaign publications, as well as on designated signage on campus. Named gift opportunities are available at certain giving levels.

Can I make a gift through means other than cash?
Yes. Appreciated stocks, gifts of real estate, charitable trusts or annuities are all wonderful means through which to make a gift.

Can I direct my gift toward a particular part of the campaign?
The best gift for the school is one that is unrestricted so it can be used where it is needed most. Donors with a deep interest in supporting a particular part of the campaign may designate their gift to that specific need, as outlined on the enclosed pledge card.

Why do I need to fill out a signed pledge card?
A signed pledge card is needed to 1) confirm your pledge or gift; 2) assure proper credit is given for each donor; and 3) assist the school and its auditors with planning.
