A Tradition of Legacies
Two of the more profound examples of individuals who wanted to thank the Academy for the important role it played in their lives can be found in Paul S. Schoedinger ’16 and George S. McElroy ’32.
Paul S. Schoedinger ’16 included Columbus Academy in his estate through a bequest which, to this day, is the single-largest one received in the school’s history. Mr. Schoedinger’s bequest funded the Schoedinger Theatre, as well as provided the means for endowed funds to support scholarships and the school’s plant and facilities. While at the Academy, Mr. Schoedinger was founding editor of the Caravel (the school’s yearbook) and came up with the school’s motto: In Quest of the Best.
The McElroy Master Chair in Mathematics was made possible through an estate gift from George S. McElroy ’32. Mr. McElroy bequeathed money to the school through his will to establish the Academy’s first endowed academic chair. As a student at Columbus Academy, Mr. McElroy was awarded both the Williams and Yale Cups (Head Boy and outstanding athlete) and later served on the Board of Trustees.
The current members of the Van Syckel Society listed below join a group of individuals whose legacies have already been realized and have made a significant impact on the school.
