Get To Know...
Shane MacElhiney Head of Upper School
Family: "My wife Emily and dog Gandalf are happily settling into Columbus. We're painting and organizing our house in Gahanna. Emily is a middle school Latin teacher and just finished her master's in school psychology. Gandalf (I'm a huge Tolkien fan) is a yellow lab."
Philosophy: "Great education starts from relationships. I have an open door policy. I love talking about schools and education in general. So students, parents and faculty, feel free to set up an appointment because I would love to meet as many people as I possibly can, as soon as I possibly can."

List of 2008 National Merit Scholars Grows to Five
A record-setting year for Columbus Academy
in the National Merit Scholarship Program ended with five National Merit
Scholars from CA's Class of 2008. Recently joining
Linda Mullin (Kenyon College), Liz Nick (Northwestern
University) and Kirun Sankaran (Ohio State University) as Academy's 2008 National Merit Scholars (see mid-summer press clippings) were Nate Vonder Haar (Case Western Reserve
University) and Joey Yang (Rice University). All of the National Merit Scholarships were
sponsored by the scholars' respective colleges except for Sankaran's, which was
sponsored by Fifth Third Bank. The five
Scholars were part of a school-record 15 National Merit Semifinalists and 13
Finalists (see photo), both figures being the most of any school in central Ohio and the most of any
independent school in the entire state.

Sports News
All students in grades 7-12 who plan on
participating in fall sports need to make sure all online school health forms
are completed before the first practice.
These forms include the Emergency Medical Release and Travel Form, the Health
History Form and the Over the Counter Medication Authorization Form ( click here to access all three). No students will be permitted to participate
in any school activity, including athletic practices, until all forms are
completed. To see a list of fall sports
coaches and practice start dates, please click here. And congratulations to Upper School
public speaking teacher Bob Kirk '67 for repeating as state cycling champion in
the Men's 55-59 category at the Ohio State Time Trials last month. He covered 23.7 miles in 54:12 for an average
speed of 26.23 miles per hour! His time
was faster than anyone in the Men's 30-34, 35-39, 55-59, CAT 4 and CAT 5
divisions and would have placed him second in the Men's 40-44, 45-49 and 50-55
competitions.
