Commencement caps historic year at Academy
|
At Commencement ceremonies for The Columbus
Academy last Thursday, the school graduated its largest class ever.
Consisting of 55 males and 35 females, the Academy's Class of 2008 outnumbered
the previous record of graduates by four (86 in 2007). Will Petrie, who will matriculate to Williams College, was honored with the Andrew
William Cary Cup, which is awarded to the senior chosen by the faculty to
deliver the valedictory address at commencement. His speech thanked the
school's teachers and highlighted the numerous accomplishments of his class,
including Academy's record number of National Merit semifinalists (15) and
finalists (13) as well as other impressive academic, athletic and artistic
accolades. The commencement address was
delivered by Stephanie Hightower, a current CA parent and vice president of
advancement for the Columbus
College of Art &
Design. In addition to Petrie,
winners of the school's most prestigious awards were Williams Cup winner Holly
Tu (University of California at Berkeley) for her positive leadership and high degree of
excellence in academics and school activities, Kenneth Scott Garlikov Award winner
Shreya Kundur (Georgetown University) for her outstanding qualities of
citizenship and ethical conduct, Alumni Cup winner Bryan Panzano (Harvard
University) for displaying originality, genuine intellectual curiosity and
independent thought, Princeton Cup winner Hobie Hondros (Hobart & William
Smith Colleges) for showing the most improvement in academics and in other hard-to-define
areas, and Sumner F. Dennett Cup winner Erica Barnes (University of South
Carolina) for making a noticeable contribution to the community. To view the Class of 2008 matriculation list,

Beatley and Keny place in Top 10 at state meet
|
Battling through an ankle injury, Academy senior
Jake Beatley finished fourth in the high jump at the Division III state track
and field championships over the weekend.
His height of 6-6 won him the state crown last year but was not enough
this time around. Sophomore speedster Geb
Keny (pictured), meanwhile, placed ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.30,
which was one of the fastest times in school history. Click here for complete results. And visit this week's Around Academy gallery
to view Cindy Wilson's photos from the track and tennis postseasons.

Zach Peters preparing for Air Force's basic cadet training this summer
|
Instead of the usual summertime activities - a summer
job or internship, sports camps, preparing for college, lounging by the pool,
etc. - Zach Peters '08 will be undergoing Basic Cadet Training before entering
the Air Force Academy. From June 26
through August 6, his only means of communication with friends and family will
be through letters. His family asks that
if you can give him a good laugh during that time period, please write to him
at Basic Cadet Zachary Peters, P.O. Box 3525, USAF Academy, CO 80841. He will be able to accept packages beginning
August 7, and his cell phone will be back in his possession at the end of
August. Peters was the rare recipient of
nominations to all three military academies.
