Vikes claim CA's first state team title in tennis
|
The Columbus
Academy boys tennis team
won the school's first Ohio Tennis Coaches Association team title Sunday by
defeating Maumee Valley Country Day 4-0 in the semifinals and Cincinnati Seven
Hills by a 3-0 score in the Division II championship. After six runner-up finishes in the past 11
years, the Vikings finally broke through behind the stellar play of senior Will
Petrie (pictured), who placed second in the Division II state singles tournament on
Saturday. The team championship was the
first for CA since the fall of 2006 (field hockey) and the first for a boys
squad since the fall of 2003 (football).
Academy has won a total of 23 state team titles in eight different
sports: boys track (2), baseball (1), boys golf (6), football (2), field hockey
(8), boys soccer (1), girls lacrosse (2) and now boys tennis. In addition to Petrie, congratulations goes
to fellow seniors Pavan Reddy and John Sugar, juniors Austin Griffin, Joey
Frank and Nate Chan, sophomores Eoghan Bahnson and Andrew Enslen, freshman John
Hendrix and head coach Jeff Warstler.

Laura Caplinger and Michael Lopresti named High School All-Americans

their respective sports. Caplinger was

Averill received an All-American honorable mention. The Vikes posted a 13-3 record for the 2008

Free physical exams for all athletes to be offered this Wednesday, June 4
|
|
Pre-participation Physical Exams (PPEs) will be
offered free of charge at Columbus Academy on Wednesday, June 4, for all
student-athletes enrolled at CA entering grades 7 through 12 in the 2008-09
academic year (click here for more detailed info). Important notes for the event: Athletes should bathe prior to arrival and
wear loose, comfortable clothing (preferably shorts and T-shirts); bring any
corrective lenses for the vision screening; no physical activity for one hour
prior to the physical exam; pages 1, 3 and 4 of the PPE form (click here) must
be completed and signed by a parent/guardian (for all student-athletes under 18
years of age) prior to the PPE exam (the physicians will not evaluate minors
without proper parent/guardian signatures giving permission); PPEs are given on
a first-come, first-served basis only on this date so it is not unusual to
expect a wait; while parents wait for their children to get their physical,
they will have the opportunity to complete or update the Medical/Travel Authorization online forms (three sections) in the computer lab (room 201) on
the upper floor of Dennett Hall. Also,
please understand that these physicals are screenings designed specifically for
sports participation, and they are intended as a supplement to, rather than a
substitute for, ongoing health care by a family physician or other
specialist. These physicals are not
designed to treat or evaluate chronic medical conditions. If your son or daughter is presently under a
physician's care for any chronic medical condition, he or she must receive
documented clearance for sports participation by that treating physician. For any questions regarding the physical exam
screenings, please contact Head Athletic Trainer Kim Stercula at 509-2257 or kim_stercula@columbusacademy.org.
